DESCRIPTION: EPW - L. Leroy & Cie, Paris, "Service Hydrographique" sidereal time deck watch with winding indicator made for French Navy, 58mm, silver OF original case marked "Service Hydrographique, L. Leroy & Cie, A No 14907" to its rear, signed gunmetal snap-on cuvette, white enamel SS dial marked "Temps" and "Sidera" (presumably originally "Sideral" which is French for sidereal) at center, SW-SS, fully capped lever escapement, 19J, wolf's tooth winding, gilt mvt, s#14907 marked to dial and case. A rare and attractive high grade piece, this is only the second example of a LeRoy deck watch which we have handled.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good winding indicator function, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, good gilt tone, some fine scratches and small peck marks to balance cock, lever jewel setting with fine scratch striations from an apparent past sanding or filing, area of finish loss and fine scratch striations at edge of pallet bridge, winding wheels with some oxide spots; dial with some fading and loss to signature and s# marking within winding indicator register, presumed loss of last letter of "Sideral," hl from center to edge at 11, very short hl above seconds-register, few very small light brown spots around center of seconds-register and winding indicator register, infinitesimal pinpoint nick to bottom rim of winding indicator register hole; hour, minute and winding indicator hand are blue, seconds-hand is plum colored, hour is excellent, winding indicator hand and minute are fine, winding indicator hand with oxide, minute with vertical bends of tip, poor seconds-hand with oxide and virtually complete finish loss; case shows little wear, an attractive moderate patina, cuvette with few short scratches at perimeter and small patch of oxide to its lower-central portion, bezel with prominent deep ding adjacent crystal near 8, dent to band at 3:30, ding to band at 4, few nicks elsewhere to band, two dings to rear shoulder at right and upper-right, good rear marking detail, case rear opens somewhat short of 90 degrees (to approximately 80 degrees); bow pivots freely, crown shows little wear; glass crystal with numerous scratches and abrasions.
